We created an interactive game about social businesses in Lithuania.

This game has 30 questions about what social business is. Also, here you can find not only answers but also ideas, learn about five social businesses that are operating in Lithuania and maybe even find inspiration to create something of your own! Five people who have tried the game will receive a book as a gift – Social Business: Systematics and Mechanisms.

Local training about small-scale businesses in Kiboga city, Uganda aimed to teach vulnerable youth about how to start their small-scale businesses. Educating them in the social business area will help them to learn the basics of proper business management, marketing. To begin with, twenty participants were selected to join the training. There youth acquired skills in three different skills and they were selected to deal with social problems in Uganda.

  1. Making candles – access to electricity is still very limited in the area, therefore the skilling in candle making will improve on access to lighting in the community.
  2. Making soap – liquid and bar soap making will increase hygiene in the community. Hunger is still a painful problem.
  3. Bakery – baking skills will improve their food ration. Using flour from matooke, cassava and sweet potatoes (locally available) for cooking will let young children from vulnerable families get what to pack and eat at school. This will improve the grades of young children in school.

Business development and management of social enterprises was incorporated in the training of the beneficiaries as they were taken through day to day skill training. The beneficiaries were trained in different modules of business management and development included; accounting (bookkeeping), marketing, Managing competition, record keeping, saving and financial management. The trained youth will become ambassadors in training other youth in the social enterprises in the community.

Post evaluation to document the project’s impact in the longer term will be done after six months.

Mentorship programme – a long way from the scratch of an idea to final result – prototype of an idea or even product. The main goal was to provide individual assistance to local youngsters who want to establish a social business. Ten mentorships were granted for the youth of Kiboga city. This programme included one to one sessions between the mentor and participant.

These are the social ideas of each participant offered (and that mentors’ consultations were based on):

1. Online school management system 

This online school management system (SECTORG3) will be a modern, automation system that suits almost every school or education institution. The system will have over 40+ different learning modules, that will ensure children’s knowledge in different subjects. Many children due to Covid-19 restrictions spend a whole year without studying. The Uganda Government decided to distribute scholastic material for children to study at home, but it is still really hard for them to study without teachers. However, this social idea is going to help out many schools in Uganda to start using online education, which is still a big challenge in the country. 

2. Plastic re-using

There was a training session for youth, how to re-use plastic bottles and straws and make out of the mats, bags, or even rings. The idea is simple – to collect as many plastic bottles or straws and develop them into products that could be sold.

3. Nursery school

One of the participants wants to establish a Nursery school, to take care of vulnerable children in the community. The main problem in her city is that there is no kindergarten at all. This nursery school will have a big impact on families, where both of the parents are working.

4. Candle making

After successful local training in making candles, one of the participants wanted to start her own business with that. It is still a big problem, that electricity is not available in most of the areas. This activity would help to make her community brighter.

5. Juice bar – shop

This participant desires to open a juice bar – shop. She already has the place where to open it and have plenty of fruits in the area. She would sell juices of mangoes, bananas, pawpaws or pineapples. The most important thing, that disposable plastic cups will be used, which is friendly to the environment. 

6. Tailoring

There is no fully dedicated service only for tailoring at their town. Young girl wants to provide excellent service, make only high-quality products and to ensure an enjoyable atmosphere for the customers.

7. Mobile milk shop

Milk is an integral food product of their eating habits. No matter what season is at the moment, milk is always on demand. The boy’s family has cows and using his bike, he could deliver milk straight to customers.

8. Confectionaries

This participant, after local training of a bakery, wanted to master how to bake cakes and make bread and then, start a baking business.

9. Rolex chapati shop

Rolex is a recognized, world-famous food, which is basically a Ugandan chapati wrapped around a fried egg. The mentor told him to serve kikomando (chapati mixture with beans) and also sell plain chapatis.

10. Ice cream shop

Idea is to sell ice cream for children who are going to school. A small amount of capital can give a good opportunity to live by doing what you like

September 24, 2020

The first Buketov Open Talks took place on September 24, 2020. Aidarov Baghlan was a guest of the event. 

Baghlan is a graduate of the international Bolashak program (UCL, London, the UK), a specialist in the fight against organized crime and terrorism (Counter Organized Crime and Terrorism), a police major, PhD of Public policy (Nazarbayev University), holder of a black belt (1 dan) in taekwondo ITF, master of sports of Kazakhstan in taekwondo ITF.

Baghlan shared his success story with students and teachers, noted the importance of motivation in doing what he loved, talked about how he started playing sports and how he achieved such incredible success.

Also, Baghlan shared information on protecting the interests of business in a pandemic, the legal aspects of social entrepreneurship.

The listeners listened attentively to Baglan’s speech and actively asked all questions. The meeting was productive and in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

November 17, 2020

On November 17, 2020, the Faculty of Economics hosted the Buketov Open Talks with a successful social entrepreneur Meruert Argimbayeva. She is the winner of the Israel Embassy contest “Outstanding Women of Kazakhstan” as the best female social entrepreneur, CEO of the Joy charity store chain. This Buketov Open Talks was held within the framework of the international Erasmus+ project “Heroes of Social Entrepreneurship”.

In November 2013, the country’s first charity shop “Joy” was opened in Karaganda, which is aimed at helping children with disorders of the brain and central nervous system. “Joy” is a classic charity shop, the net profit of which goes to the treatment of such children, as well as to provide assistance to disabled people, boarding schools and crisis centers in the region. The essence of the activity is that citizens give the store new and used items free of charge. 70% of these items are distributed to poor families throughout the Karaganda and Pavlodar regions. About 5% of incoming items are handed over for recycling. The remaining 25% of the items – new and in perfect condition-are sold at a price three times lower than the market price. The net profit of these money goes to charity.

After the conference, the audience presented their ideas for charity entrepreneurship, made presentations and a business plan for projects.

A second Buketov Open Talk was held on the same day. Baibosynov Serikzhan Berikbayevich, the director of the branch of the Academy of Public Administration under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Karaganda region and a business coach and expert in project management was the host of the talk.

Serikzhan Berikbayevich shared his experience of using project management technology in social business and professional experience, ways of thinking and acting, developing cognitive activity and the creative potential of each student.

After the session, the students adapted the development of their projects to the technology of project management (agile, SCRUM). Two weeks later they shared results of the project management methods.

December 10, 2020

On December 10, 2020, the Faculty of Economics hosted the Buketov Open Talks with Talgat Turumbayev – co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of Kusto Group (Singapore), member of the Board of Directors of Coteccons (Vietnam), graduate and benefactor of the Faculty of Economics.

Talgat Turumbayev was telling the students about his success story and shared his business experience.

As a talented manager, he knows how to a business successful, profitable, and scalable. This is proved by his high-class global projects!

After the online meeting, students filled in business models to further implement their ideas.

December 12, 2020

On December 12, 2020, Aigerim Karibaeva, a graduate of the Faculty of Economics, ex-captain of the Enactus Buketov team, a specialist of the AsiaWaters company, visited the Buketov Open Talks.

Students learned about her success story, as well as the creation of the team, and were encouraged by the cohesiveness of the team force. 

She told about the development of personal qualities. Each person is individual in his own way and does not need to adapt to generally accepted standards, trying to imitate someone. She said how to take a positive example and learn from someone else’s mistakes, but do not live someone else’s life. It is very important to clearly understand what you want and what you strive for when creating your personal horizons to be successful. The struggle with fear is the discovery of new opportunities and personal qualities. Perhaps it is under your fear that your life’s vocation is hidden.

Students noted their barriers to career creation, and also understood what practical skills they lacked to implement their plans.

The SEH conference meeting was held on 15/01/2021, At SS HOTEL KAMPALA.

Theme – to raise awareness on Social Entrepreneurships Heroes project.

The various stakeholders were invited to attend the conference, which included – the local leaders, social workers, community development officer of the Sub-County. SEH Youth Conference brought a group of 30 vulnerable young people of similar ages and a couple of adults together from Kiboga district.

This conference aimed to inform others, what was this project about and what has been done. All activities were introduced, which happened during the entire project. Main speakers of this conference were successful social entrepreneurs from Kiboga, who advised the youth on how to start a social business that benefits the community and helps to have a stable job. Community members, who participated in the SEH training gave their feedback about the project. Results were introduced to the target audience: young people, potential educators, social workers, researchers.

On October 6, 2020, a meeting of scientists of the Faculty of Economics, representatives of social business and students was held on the topic “Business Reset: new formats”.

The topics:

  • Nikkel Leila – a topic of the report: “Social entrepreneurship in the context of a pandemic: problems and prospects”;
  • Gakaeva Aishat – topic: “the Internet is after a reboot: trends and new formats”;
  • Aimbetova Aida, Shipilova Elizaveta and Seidullayeva Adema – topic of the report: “Smart trip-travel of a new generation”.

The incredibly rapid development of information and telecommunications technologies and the spread of the coronavirus infection (COVID-19) are radically changing not only our daily habits, the way we communicate and the nature of our work. All modern business, including social entrepreneurship, is in the process of transformation. Companies respond to the challenges of the times by adapting their business models to rapidly changing circumstances and implementing new, more effective tools. Students and undergraduates of the Faculty of Economics presented current research and a startup project in the field of social entrepreneurship, digital marketing and smart technologies in tourism.

It is right to say that the project has officially begun!

On the 10-14th of January, all partners met in Vilnius, Lithuania to commence first work for social entrepreneurship around the globe. Partners on this project include Active Youth based in Lithuania, Associación Civil Red de Acción Climática (RAMCC), based in Argentina, Karaganda State University based in Kazakhstan, Muwanga Development Association based in Uganda, and Bharati Vidyapeeth based in India.

During the kickoff, project’s team visited various of local entrepreneurs and social enterprises. For example, Mano Guru — a salad bar in Vilnius which employs ex-cons — to better understand social enterprises as well as the current social entrepreneurship ecosystem in Lithuania (and the EU in a broader sense). During the rest of the kick-off meeting, partner organizations founded a plan for the duration of the two years facilitating this project. Project aims to organize and conduct training courses, exchanges, and various other activities in each of the project countries as well as to create an open-source online platform were youth and other enthusiasts could learn about social entrepreneurship.
